Poem
(Submitted by a listener)
I told a poem to a friend of mine,
She liked it real well,
And she introduced me to a friend of hers,
That she thought would find me swell.
It turns out this friend had a radio show,
She asked me to be a guest,
I accepted, ‘cause promoting my poetry,
Had turned in to my new quest.
So I jump in my truck, an’ I head into town,
To the radio station I took her,
An’ when I met this gal, my ol’ jaw plumb fell,
‘Cause boys she is sure quite the looker.
I was then hustled in, to a studio room,
Just about twelve feet by ten,
There were many more guests, to be on that day,
So they crammed in at least eight of them.
Now I’m sure if you saw that studio,
Your face would have to smile,
We were sitting crammed in wall to wall,
Given space we’d stretch a mile.
But Daytona sits undaunted,
As it’s “past noon”, we all joke,
She says “It happens all the time”,
As she eats lunch and drinks her coke.
But suddenly, she is all business,
As her son cues up her mike,
Her voice pours forth so smooth and sweet,
As professional as you like.
First her voice will lift your spirits,
Then she’ll play a song or two,
And she’ll cover things in our community,
That you might want to do.
Meanwhile back at the studio,
We’re all stuck holding our sides,
’Cause every time she gets a break,
She’s cutting up, and giving high fives.
She’s saying, ”See how I pulled that one off”,
Or giving her son some guff,
But when the airs dead, he won’t take it,
He’ll say, “You didn’t talk enough!”
Now I’ve mentioned her son twice now,
As for weight he pulls his share,
‘Cause at the tender age of sixteen,
He engineers her time to air.
And they certainly work good together,
They make a darn fair team,
And if the audience could just see them,
Their antics would sure make them scream.
But time always flies, when your having fun,
The show soon comes to an end,
And you’ll have to “Tune back in tomorrow”,
To hear that lovely voice again.
So if you need some cheering up,
‘Cause your wits are at their end,
Just tune in here each day at noon,
It’s called Daytona and friends.
And if you ever hear her laughing,
As she comes back on the air,
You can now picture, just what you’d see,
With a view from a guest chair.
On a personal note, I say “Thank You”
Being part of the show’s a good time,
I’d share a horse and a trail, with either of you,
‘Cause you both are good friends of mine.
